International Academy of Philosophy Liechtenstein
International Academy of Philosophy Liechtenstein Profile
The IAP was founded in 1986. A group of professors and a Board of Trustees took upon themselves the responsibility of guiding a school that was unique in the world as a degree-giving academic institute entirely committed to the study of philosophy. Under the guidance of this group – led by Prof. Dr. Josef Seifert, Founding Rector of the IAP – the IAP quickly gathered around itself a group of academics and students whose varied yet interrelated interests made the IAP a lively centre for graduate education and research.
A notable proportion of these professors and students gathered together on the basis of a common interest in the philosophical movements of Phenomenological Realism and Ethical Personalism. Interestingly, however, a brief perusal of the list of the IAP’s permanent and guest professors reveals that the IAP is now home to, and visited by a diversity of thinkers that belies its modest size.
The seventeen years since the founding of the IAP have been fruitful. Almost half of the graduates of the IAP have taken up research or teaching positions at universities or research organizations in Europe and North and South America, while others have gone on to further studies in philosophy and other fields at such renowned universities as Oxford and Harvard. Furthermore, the different research programs conducted at the IAP have resulted in the publication of many books and in noteworthy contributions to questions of contemporary philosophical or cultural importance.
