Escola Superior de Educação de Portalegre

The School of Education of Portalegre was legally established in 1979, along with their counterparts in the context of the institutionalization of polytechnic education. However, only began in 1985, formally, its activities. The Installation Committee first took office on June 28 this year and had the essential tasks to promote the start of school and begin the construction of their permanent premises. Today, traveled more than two decades, we realize the importance of this day.
We chose to occupy the beautiful palatial building of the Republic Square, with a past also linked to education, since it was here that he ran the National School of Portalegre.

The school would integrate later in the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre, with the creation of this law and the appointment of its President of the AET.

The ESEP lived under the facility until 1996. This year, we approved the first statutes and elected the first Board in place of the Assembly of Representatives.

The school left the system installation and now the definitive arrangements, initiating, then, the process of election of all organs and structures for governing and managing scientific-pedagogical.

Some dates of the relevant ESEP deserve to be highlighted in the initial training, postgraduate and continuing concerns: The first activities of the School of Education of Portalegre, the academic year 1985/86 were devoted to in-service training of teachers of all levels of education. In the following year, started the first courses of initial teacher training: bacharorships in Childhood Educators and Teachers of Primary Education (appointed by then), and the equivalence degree in Basic Education Teachers in Variants of Mathematics and Sciences Nature Education Visual and Portuguese and French. The list of courses offered, went to join in 1990/91, a variant of Portuguese and English courses in Basic Education Teachers.

In 1994/95 were created in bacharorships Educational and Sociocultural Animation, Journalism and Communication and Tourism and Spa.

In 1997/98 were proposed curriculum changes the courses of Educational and Sociocultural Animation, Journalism and Communication and Tourism and Spa, which came to be approved for operation in that school year, with the consecration of the course of Journalism and Communication as a graduate, as well as changes resulting from passage of all courses of teacher licensure. The degree bietápicas Educational and Sociocultural Animation and Tourism and Spa were approved to become operational in the academic year 1999/2000.

In the same year began the courses complement the scientific and pedagogical training, qualification for the exercise of other educational functions for teachers and educators and specialized training.
In 2003/04 for the first time in its history, the school began offering Master courses, in the case of Science in Education, Specialist in Education, Local Development and Social Change, in partnership with the University of Porto. Later, in 2005/06, opened a new Master of Science Education - History of Education, in partnership with the University of Lisbon. The Master in Tourism - specializing in Tourism and Entertainment, in partnership with the University of Évora, had the first edition in the academic year 2007/08.

From 2004/05, began to offer two new training courses - Social Services and Tourist Information.
In 2006/2007 the ESEP took another step towards the deepening of the work being done in the area of adult education. In terms of appreciation and recognition of knowledge and skills developed throughout life, offered the possibility (framed by Decree-Law No. 64/2006) for admission in their initial training courses to people over 23 years.

But not only initial training, ongoing and post-graduate lives ESEP. The School has a tradition of development of intervention projects, training and research, both in the educational development both within the local development. In this process, multiplied partnerships with different institutions of the district, from elementary schools to municipalities, companies and institutions through the social economy sector. To support the development of this entire socio-educational intervention for the current feature about 720 students, 70 teachers and 34 staff and community service, the ESEP provides a valuable resource center, consisting of a document center, a center audiovisual production, a production and publishing, and a computer center. The ESEP has, in recent years to consolidate an array of development which has to deepen synergies between different areas of knowledge underlying the training on offer (teacher training, socio-cultural intervention, communication and tourism) and the different natures of their socio-educational intervention (initial training, continuing education and postgraduate education, research and development projects).

Wanted, thus building a training intervention in natural identity and socio-educational anchored in Education.
Over the 25 years of its existence, ESEP has contributed to the training and qualification of many people - about 2,900 graduates and more than 500 graduates with majors and graduate programs.
This is only the visible face of the work of ESEP, for development of higher education and the region of Portalegre.

However, the future is an invention that involves permanent relive and reflect on options, courses, initiatives, complicity and difficulties, but also involves perspective, therefore, new ways. That's what we try to do, diversifying and renewing the offer, but consolidating strategic development options.

In the academic year 2006/07 were approved by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher Education as adapted to the Bologna Process of Sociocultural degrees in Animation, Journalism and Communication, Social Work and Tourism. In addition to these courses were also approved two new courses linked to school development matrix - degrees in Art Education and Adult Education and Training. Also approved was a degree in primary education, according to new legislation enquadradora of qualification for teaching, which will provide access to professional master's degrees in teacher training for the various cycles of basic education. The proposed Masters in Education Preschool Teacher of the 1st and 2nd cycle of basic education were approved and begin this academic year 2010/2011. In addition to these Masters will be held another edition of the Masters in Adult Education, also the responsibility of the ESEP, which had its first edition in the academic year 2008/2009. In partnership with six other Colleges of Education, Master in Teaching of English and French will work in this school year, the School of Education of Castelo Branco. The ESEP this year presents the new Masters in Journalism, Communication and Culture, which allows students to the first cycle of Journalism and Communication a course of specialization and deepening professional skills.

Yet in operation in 2007/08, the Center for Languages and Cultures of the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre (CLIC), with its component CLIC training to operate the premises of ESEP, with courses in languages for the whole community of the IPP, but also for all stakeholders (children, adolescents or adults) who wish to develop skills, increase knowledge or prepare for the examinations of the respective European languages. Since 2006/2007, the ESEP is a promoter of a Center for New Opportunities. This project, supported the mission of the School in its aspects of Education and Training of Adults, seeks, in essence, the development of processes of recognition, validation and certification of skills, for adults aged 18 years or more. We know the importance of higher education, the Polytechnic Institute of Portalegre and the School of Education for a remote region of the country such as ours, why the ESEP wants to continue to assert itself as a center for regional development.
