After the death of Ramon Llull, teaching his doctrine begins the year 1314 in the Calle del Call. Beatriz de Pinos and Agnes favored Pax chairs involved in the formation of school Llull developed in Call Street, next to the chapel of Santa Magdalena, until 1561 when they move the building from the street Sant Roc which had been acquired by the "Jurats" (General Luliano current study).
The Royal Literary i i Pontifical University Juliana de Mallorca was created on August 30, 1483 under the name "Generals Studies" by King Ferdinand, whose arms, with the city of Palma and the surname LLULL, decorate the shield, between Gothic and Renaissance, is on top of the portal entrance.
The Pontifical University Mallorcan was erected by Clement X on April 17, 1673. He lived intensely, regularly giving degrees in Theology, Arts, Law and Medicine with an undisputed reputation marked by the passage in their classrooms i chairs of cardinals, prelates, doctors and lawyers among which include the undisputed figure of Junipero Serra, founder of California .
In the late eighteenth century began a period of decline that culminated in 1829 when he became a depending Studies Seminar at the University of Cervera to disappear in 1835.
In 1778 he created the "Friends of the Country Societat d'" which remained in the building of the street Sant Roc until 1949. The current Ramon Llull Institute, created in 1835, also served as General Study building until 1837 when it became Montesión where he remained until the year 1916 to take their new and current building. In the year 1916 drawing classes were held still in the General Survey.
The year 1849 the building hosted the Academy of Fine Arts and was the headquarters of the School of Arts and Crafts as well as the Provincial Monuments Commission.
A bombardment of the civil war of 1936 left the building in ruins.
The year 1950 is established a board to reconstruct the building of the General Survey in the solar Luliano was loaned by the city of Palma. The Board worked out a draft constitution that he is an example of the cultural evolution of the islands and promoter of the restoration of university education in Mallorca.
The architect Gabriel Alomar, a member of the Board, drafted the building. Work began on July 3, 1950. Stalled in 1953 due to lack of resources. 1963, with the help of the Juan March Foundation works were recommenced left the building nearing completion. Only missing the hall whose construction began in 1966 to conclude in 1972 to comply with Roman ruins were discovered.
On May 12, 1951 the Rector of the University of Barcelona named the first Executive Council of the General Survey Luliano. The newly created institution was born with the aim to investigate and promote the culture of the island and get back the university. They created different sections grouping together the various branches of culture with the aim of combining individual and collective initiatives.
The objectives set out in the Statutes are accomplished gradually through the efforts and perseverance of the Governing Council.
On October 26, 1951 was created the Center for University Teaching. On October 1951, began offering classes in the common course of Arts and two law courses at the University of Barcelona. These classes ended with the 1956-57 year for lack of funds.
The summer of 1951 began the Spanish courses for foreigners.
In 1952 efforts were undertaken to create a university chair. On February 2, 1959 established the Chair Ramon Llull attached to the Faculty of Arts at the University of Barcelona-based General Luliano Study.
During 1952/53 starts teaching of Catalan and foreign languages.
Language education led to the creation of the Institute of Modern Languages.
The year 1958 began Catalan classes, from 1967, were scheduled for the Work Cultural Balear.
On October 18, 1967 fulfilled one of the most important objectives of the General Survey, was held the opening ceremony of the common studies of the Faculty of Philosophy and Letters at the University of Barcelona, the seed of what will be later the University Balearic Islands.
Regardless of the cultural mission that the General Survey carried out, has worked with the carrying out other cultural institutions, integrating or albergándolas temporarily or permanently.
Numerous are the entities that developed in the General Survey:
Official College of Doctors and Lawyers, Real Association d'Historia Natural, Balearic Delegation of the Association of Pedagogy of the CSIC Delegation of Archaeological Excavations Insular de Mallorca; Medical Association and the Balearic Islands, Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Palma; Delegation Baleares International Association of Young Musicians, Real Sociedad Economica de Amigos del Pais, Commission of Artistic and Historic Monuments of Mallorca, Association of Friends of Fray Junipero Serra, Balearic Asocio Esperanto, School of Social Workers, Association of Astronomy, Elemental Conservatory Music, Group OCIO; Bar Association; Mayoricense Lulística School, School of Tourism, School of Social Work courses at the University of Barcelona, UNED, Friends of the Mills, Societat d'Historia Natural, etc..
Since 2008 the seat of the Higher School Balearic Islands, where the ESB performed in conjunction with other universities, university education and postgraduate Masters.
The General Survey continues to host the Association of Friends of the Maritime Museum i the Municipal Library.
